I think I know what you are describing for your set up. Getting a nice definitive grind line is one of the harder parts of a hollow grind. More difficult for me is getting my plunge cuts even. I use an eight inch serrated contact wheel on my 2 x 60 Burr king. Better to learn how to grind freehand than to use jigs.

I rough grind on a 24 inch wheel on a machine I built with flood coolant and a fixture to hold the blade, cant do curves though. The wheel has worn down to about 18 inches, I got a replacement off eBay recently. After heat treat I finish on the 2 X72 with a curved platten (freehand). It works well, I like the looks of the shallow hollow grind.

Grinding Jigs

I'm in the process of making two jigs. One is somewhat similar to your idea, but a bit simpler design. I got a door hinge at Home Depot, 2" angle steel, and some 2" wide x 1/8" steel. Similar to the picture below. The other is a flat grinding jig similar to the hollow grind jig sold by Jantz (Well similar premise anyway).

Having done gunsmithing work, I have always ground them by hand. It will take some practice but well worth it. I also hollow grind them. Point the blade in the up position when grinding. I prefer the tip to have very little taper. I think it helps prevent the blade from "camming" its self out of the grove. Michael
